Benefits explained
Compare the whole offer, including what the employer provides, what you pay, and when you become eligible.
What to ask before accepting an offer
- Paid time off (PTO)
- Paid time away from work. Ask how time is earned, which uses it covers, and what approval or waiting periods apply.
- Health coverage
- Ask when coverage starts, what comes out of your paycheck, and how deductibles, copays, and provider networks work under the plan.
- Retirement plan
- Ask whether the employer offers a plan, contributes or matches employee contributions, and when employer contributions become yours through vesting.
- Shift differential
- Extra pay an employer may offer for particular shifts. Ask which hours qualify and whether a posted range already includes it.
- Eligibility and waiting periods
- Benefits can depend on the position, hours, location, and plan terms. Request the written details that apply to your offer.
Use the employer’s written plan documents and current official guidance below for the actual terms. These general explanations do not establish what any particular employer must provide.
